Big news from Romania! Ahold Delhaize, the global grocery giant, has officially received approval from Romanian regulators to acquire Profi Rom Food SRL (Profi), one of the country’s largest grocery retailers. With the final hurdle cleared, the deal is set to close in early January 2025.
What does this mean? Profi’s 1,751 stores, known for their affordable prices and great variety, will now join Ahold Delhaize’s family of brands. This is big for Ahold Delhaize, which already operates 977 Mega Image stores in Romania, mostly in cities. By adding Profi’s strong presence in both urban and rural areas, the company plans to reach even more Romanian shoppers.
Claude Sarrailh, CEO of Ahold Delhaize Europe & Indonesia, shared his excitement, saying, “Romania is a growing market with a bright future. We’re ready to welcome Profi and ensure a smooth transition.”
Why is this important? Romania’s economy is on the rise, with increasing public spending and wealth. For Ahold Delhaize, this deal is a chance to grow sales, improve profitability, and strengthen its position in a key market.
With Profi generating €2.7 billion in sales in the last year, this acquisition sets the stage for a stronger, united presence in Romania’s grocery scene. Keep an eye out as the deal wraps up next month—this could change how Romanians shop for good!
