Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe) is shaking up the wine industry with its new lightweight wine bottles. The company announced the launch on October 9, 2024, targeting the European market.
The lightweight range of standard wine bottles marks a significant step towards sustainability. AGP-Europe has cut the weight of their 750ml Bordeaux and Schlegel bottles from 410g to 360g. This 50g reduction might seem small, but it’s a big deal for the environment.
Eco-Friendly Lightweight Wine Bottle Production
These new bottles aren’t just lighter. They’re also greener. AGP-Europe uses up to 80% recycled glass cullet in production. This high recycled content helps cut carbon emissions by 12% per bottle.
The lightweight range offers options for every winemaker. Both bottle styles come with a screw cap finish. The Bordeaux bottle also has a cork mouth option. Winemakers can choose from flint, antique green, and standard green colors. The Schlegel range even offers a royal blue option.
AGP-Europe makes these bottles at their Germersheim plant in Germany. This adds to their existing lightweight options, which include a 345g wine bottle made in the UK.
Stuart Santon, Chief Commercial Officer at AGP-Europe, highlighted the benefits. “Our new lightweight wine bottles give customers choice and cut carbon footprints,” he said. This move shows AGP-Europe’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The wine industry is taking notice. These lighter bottles could change how wine is packaged and shipped. For winemakers and consumers alike, it’s a win for quality and the environment.
